My obsession for the Imperial family may seem strange given the fact French people are known to loathe monarchy. Let’s be realistic, we loathe monarchy for France. It’s a perfectly valid political system for other nations. Look at our archennemies accross the Channel : they seem to manage quite well with one.

  Monarchy can be a mean to keep a stable symbol for your nation, and given the life span of Japanese gouvernments lately, that’s great there still is an Imperial family in the background.

  So Mako-sama turned 20 on Sunday. Her Imperial Highness Mako of Akishino is the older grandchild of the Emperor, daughter of Prince Akishino, second son of the Emperor. Everybody’s still OK ? She is not in line for succession since the Japanese monarchy is under agnatic primogeniture.

  She has often been seen at interviews given by her parents, or at events hold by them but on Sunday, as a new adult, she gave her first standalone interview. And she was brilliant.

  She answered a lot of questions about her future public and current private life and managed to tell a journalist she would not answer his question, and to cleverly play “I-can-see-what-is-hidden-behind-your-question-and-I-will-not-fall-in-your-trap” with another, both without being rude.

  OK, she wore pink. But I forgive her.

  I am really looking forward to hearing more from her.

Regardez nos meilleurs ennemies de l’autre côté de la Manche : ils semblent se débrouiller pas trop mal avec.

  La monarchie peut être un moyen de garder un symbole stable de la nation, et quand on voit la durée de vie des gouvernements japonais récemment, on se dit que c’est bien qu’il y ait toujours une famille impériale à l’arrière-plan.

  Ainsi, Mako-sama a eu 20 ans dimanche. Son Altesse Impériale la princesse impériale Mako d’Akishino est le petit-enfant de l’Empereur le plus âgé, fille du prince Akishino, second fils de l’Empereur. Tout le monde suit ? Elle n’est pas dans la ligne de succession au trône car la monarchie japonaise fonctionne sous primogéniture agnatique.

  On l’a souvent vue aux conférences de presse données par ses parents ou aux événements auxquels ils participaient, mais dimanche, en tant que nouvel adulte, elle a donné sa première conférence de presse personnelle. Et elle a été brillante.

  Elle a répondu à de nombreuses questions sur sa future vie publique et son actuelle vie privée et a réussi à dire à un journaliste qu’elle ne répondrait pas à sa question et à jouer intelligemment à “je-comprends-ce-qu’il-y-a-derrière-ta-question-et-je-ne-tomberai-pas-dans-ton-piège” avec un autre, les deux en restant courtoise.

  D’accord, elle était habillée en rose. Mais je lui pardonne.

  J’attends vraiment avec impatience d’entendre de nouveau parler d’elle.
